Kyng May 18 2014

This was a cool experience. I first saw Kyng opening for Danzig a few years earlier. I really dug there album "Trampled Sun" . Now they were out supporting their newest album "Burn The Serum" They were not the headliner at this show. They were opening for Kill Devil Hill. A kind of Supergroup formed by Vinnie Appice of Black Sabbath & Dio along with Rex Brown of Pantera and Mark Zavon & Dewey Bragg. Vinny had already left the band and was replaced with Johnny Kelly of Danzig. But to be honest with you, I was not there to see Kill Devil Hill. There were other opening bands there also, ( I think Crobot) but I don't remember any of them. Tim was with me again. And this is easily the shortest distance I have ever traveled for a show. The venue was only about three quarters of a mile away from my house. The crowd was ... well, nonexistent. Very small crowd. I don't know if that Vinny Paul's band Hell Yeah was playing the following night had any impact on the fact that there was no crowd for this show, but, there was almost nobody there.

I really shouldn't have waited ten years to write down my memories of this show. I don't have a setlist either. I only remember that Kyng was playing as if the place was packed! They really put on a good show. During the middle of the show, as I'm standing there just rocking out with really nobody else around me, some guy walks up and stands right next to me. I thought that was a little weird with all of the extra room in the place, but then turned to look to see who it was. It was Rex Brown! I wish I could tell you some great story about us rocking out together, having a blast, becoming best friends and so on, but I froze! I didn't know what to do. I'm bad about that. We just stood there listening to Kyng together. After the song was over, Rex jumped up on stage and jammed with Kyng on Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher". That was a definite highlight!

After Kyng's set came Kill Devil Hill. And while we were jammin to the first few songs, Tim noticed the members of Kyng were hanging out at the bar in the back of the venue. Now Tim never freezes like I do when it comes to having a good time! The singer Eddie Veliz was sitting at their merch table, and to be honest, he did not look like he was having any fun at this point of the night. The fact that there was nobody at the show might have had something to do with it. No crowd equals not much in merch sales and you're not getting as much "word of mouth" about your band. I totally understand. But, I bought Burn The Serum on CD and he was nice enough to sign it for me. Tony Castaneda, the bass player, was at the bar. Tim struck up a conversation, he signed my CD, and we sat at the bar drinking tequila shooting the shit for a while. Really nice guy! I never got my CD signed by the drummer Pepe Clarke, because I just didn't see him the rest of the night. We finished watching Kill Devil Hill, and was going to stick around and meet Rex and Johnny, but the few fans that were there were really pushy and annoying, so we decided to split. I had to work early the next day anyway. Tim was trying to talk me into going to Hell Yeah the next night, but at that time, late nights on Mondays were not an option. Tuesdays were long stressful days at work and I needed my sleep. Tim actually worked as security for that show with a friend of ours Josh. I wish I would have went. I don't have the set list but here are some pics I stole from facebook.

Black Sabbath August 18 2013

What can you say about Black Sabbath that hasn't already been said? The very first cassette tape I ever bought with my own money was Ozzy Osbourne's Bark at the Moon. I was instantly hooked! I then worked my way backwards through the Ozzy catalog and found Black Sabbath. HOLY HELL! What a life changer! Timeless songs. I never got to see Ozzy on his own so this was one of my most anticipated shows I have ever bought tickets too. With me as always was Tim and his wife's uncle Scott. A cool guy.  We tailgated a little before the show since there was no opening band. Just Andrew W.K. acting as a D.J. playing records. Not something any of us needed to see. Tim tailgated a little more than us and cought a nap after we got to our seats. I'm not sure how many songs he missed, but he was sawing some serious logs and I wasn't about to wake him!

Black Sabbath was promoting their album 13 which is just classic sounding Sabbath. Unfortunately Bill Ward was not a part of this album or tour, but Tommy Clufetos did an outstanding job filling in for Ward. As the intro music was playing, Ozzy was testing out his microphone and hyping up the crowd by saying "Cukcoo" .  The set list is a greatest hits set with three songs from the new album thrown in.

War Pigs

Into The Void

Under The Sun/Every Day comes and Goes

Snowblind

Age of reason

Black Sabbath

Behind The Wall Of Sleep

Bassically/N.I.B.

End Of  The Beginning

Fairies Wear Boots

Rat Salad/Drum Solo

Iron Man

God Is Dead?

Dirty Women

Children Of The Grave

Paranoid

The band was on fire! Ozzy's voice was not in the best shape. You could hear that the years were catching up to him. This did not take away from the experience. You felt for him, because you know he wants to give you 100% every show. Here are a few crappy pics.

Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators September 25 2012

My wife's uncle won two tickets for this show on a radio station call in the day of the show. He sold them to me for $10 each. So I called Tim up (who is not really a Slash/GnR fan) and away we went. I really like Slash. I think he's an excellent guitar player Guns N Roses were a phenomenon. And at this point, I had doubts they would ever reunite. I never saw them in their heyday so I was excited to see this show. $10 tickets didn't hurt either! Tim bought me a beer and a Jagerbomb at the show which more than covered the price of admission!

I can't remember a second opening act, but for some reason I think there was. There is one I do remember which is a band called Foxy Shasam. They had a sleazy glam rock sound that neither of us really go for. Just not my cup of tea! This was their set list from Setlist.fm

Welcome to the Church of Rock and Roll
 The Rocketeer
 Holy Touch
 Unstoppable
 Yes! Yes! Yes!
 Killin' It
 I Like It
 The Temple

Now Slash! I knew hearing GnR songs with a different singer would be weird, but Myles Kennedy is really good. It still sounded different, but not bad at all. I didn't know the songs from their new album, but it's just good Rock N Roll! I really enjoyed all of the songs.

Halo
Nightrain
Ghost
Standing In The Sun
Back From Cali
Mean Bone
Civil War
Rocket Queen
No More Heroes
Carolina
Doctor Alibi ( A song Slash recorded with Lemmy. Todd Kerns, bass player, handled the vocals here)
Out Ta Get Me (Todd Kerns on Vocals)
Not for Me
Starlight
Slash Guitar Solo (Major highlight for me personally)
Anastasia
You're A Lie
Sweet Child O' Mine
Slither
(Encore)
Fall To Pieces
Paradise City

Now, for some reason, we left before the encore. I am still to this day kicking myself in the ass for leaving before hearing Paradise City. Here's some pics. They're a little grainy but it's all I got.

Michale Graves August 9 2012

I don't remember much from this show other than disappointment. Tim was along with me as always since we both love The Misfits. The venue was super small and not very many people were there. Like twenty people or so. I was hoping to get a limited edition CD single, "Touch Me" that Michale had recorded with Sal Bee and Sardonica. They didn't have any left which is understandable, although one of the crew members offered to sell me his at a very inflated price. No thanks. I also wanted to get my CD of Famous Monsters autographed with this silver sharpie that I had had Dr. C.H.U.D. sign it with, but I forgot the sharpie at home. That's on me.

The opening bands were Dead End Drive Inn and Grave Robber.  A couple of local bands. It has been 12 years since this show and I can't remember anything about Dead End Drive Inn. Grave Robber were pretty cool. A little more theatrical with the costumes. I remember the energy being there. I bought their CD  "You're All Gonna Die" at the show, and I'll still give it a listen every now and then. Good Album.

As far as anything Misfits related goes, this was a very stripped down, no horror punk makeup, low energy show. Now, I don't understand what his reasons were, and I get that some artist like to do this, but Michale decided to change the arrangements on most of the songs from fast paced punk sound to a more depressing emo sound. I was really looking forward to hear "Dig Up Her Bones" as it originally sounded. It's a great song! This was not what we were expecting. I was so disappointed in this I didn't even stick around to get my CD autographed. I don't have the Set list from the show, but this one is from 3 days later. I doubt they changed it up to much. Thank you Setlist.fm

Metallica November 12 2023

Day 2 of the No Repeat Weekend! Originally, this was supposed to be me, my Son in Law, and with me as always my friend Tim who has been with me at most of the concerts that I've been to. Well, that's not quite how it turned out. With the show being on Sunday, and me not wanting to drive the four hours home that night, staying till Monday morning, my Son in Law could not get Monday off. So I decided to ask Mike (a friend from work) to go with us. Then Tim had to bail out due to some medical issues. So now it was just Mike and I. I could of found someone to give the extra ticket to, but I wanted to make a lot of extra stops on the way there and on the way home to some historical spots to take some photos for a different project I have in the works. And Mike is flexible with his schedule and knows what I'm doing with the other project. He's been with me on some of my historical adventures before. So there you go. On to Detroit! After checking into the hotel we got some Coney Dogs at Lafayette Coney Island. I guess Coney's are a Detroit staple so, when in Rome! They were very good. And I swear John Belushi took our orders! Instead of cheeseburgers it was coney dogs! We got to the Venue and Mike thought he would be able to get his camera in since it did not have a detachable lens. I didn't think he could. It's not a small camera, but not a very large one either. So I was prepared to have to sit there and wait for him to take his camera back to the hotel. It was only a 15 minuet walk to the hotel, but I was not looking forward to the wait. Well low and behold they let him bring it in! We got there a little earlier than Friday so had some time before the start of the show. We just sat there and people watched. Saw one guy wearing a T shirt from a strip club from our home town which was cool.

Opening act, Ice Nine Kills. I have no idea who they are! They seem to be more on the theatrical side. I think that would be a better experience in a smaller venue. It was kind of hard to see what they were doing. Never the less, they didn't sound to bad. I plan on buying their CD soon to give them a closer listen. Here's the set list.

 Rainy Day
 Hip To Be Scared
 Meet & Greet
 Ex-Mortis
 Welcome To Horrorwood
 Wurst Vacation
 The Shower Scene
 Stabbing In The Dark

Up Next, Five Finger Death Punch. The people sitting behind us name dropped one of the members of the band as the source of their tickets. I'm going to be straight up. This band has never clicked with me. I used this time to go to the restroom and to buy my daughter and Son In Law some Metallica T shirts. I could still hear the band, and that was ok for me. I did hear when they played Bad Company. There are TVs in the concourse around the stadium. The Detroit Lions were playing The Los Angeles Chargers in LA. It was a great game. And the concourse erupted louder than the band when Riley Patterson hit the game winning 41 yard field goal. Lions 41 Chargers 38. I got back to my seat and finished watching the last couple of songs. and got a few pics. Here's the set list

Lift Me Up
Trouble
Wash It All Away
Jekyll And Hyde
Bad Company
IOU
Wrong Side Of Heaven
Burn MF
Welcome To The Circus
Under And Over It
The Bleeding

And here's a link to the Lions game highlights!

And Now Metallica Part 2! This was Mike's first time seeing Metallica. Unfortunately a lot of the songs
Mike wanted to hear were played on Friday. What can you do? Let's just get to it! Here's the set list.

Whiplash (First time hearing this one! One of my first favorite songs!)
For Whom The Bell Tolls (Classic!)
Ride The Lightning (Another Classic!)
Dirty Window (First time hearing this one. I know I'm in the minority, but I like this album!)
72 Seasons. (My second favorite of the new songs)
If Darkness Had A Son ( I'm digging this song too!)
Motown Yo Town (Kirk and Rob Doodle)
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) (Masterpiece!)
You Must Burn! (Solid new song)
The Call Of Ktulu!!!!! (My bucket list is getting shorter!)
The Unforgiven
Wherever I May Roam (When I used to play guitar, I would jam the last 2 songs A LOT!)
Moth Into Flame
Fight Fire With Fire! (One of the heaviest songs ever written!)
Whiskey In The Jar (First time for this one. Great song!)
One (A must for any show! I wish my kids could have seen this one.)
Enter Sandman

Here's a couple of videos

These are pics from Mikes camera. Well, what else can I say? Two nights, almost a thousand miles. One of the best show experiences I've ever had!

Metallica November 10 2023

It's been a little while! Anything happen between 2019 and 2023? I would say we are almost back to normal. One thing the time gave people was time to do new projects. And Metallica recorded a new album. 72 Seasons. It's a solid Metallica Album. The news of this album was broke in November 2022 and tickets went on sale a week later. They happened to go on sale on my birthday. Ticket prices (like everything else) have gone up. I wasn't sure if I would buy these, but I did! For 2 shows no less! The 72 Seasons tour has a new gimmick. No repeat weekends! Two shows, one city, two entirely different shows. I wanted to take my daughter and son in law to these shows. Metallica is my favorite band ever and I wanted to share that with them. So I bought three tickets for two nights. I don't ask the people I go to concerts with to pay back the price of the ticket if I buy it without asking them about it first. My daughter (due to her job) would only be able to attend one night. So I figured that she could do one and my friend Tim could do the other with my son in law going to both shows. This would mean a lot of driving. This is the farthest I've drove for concerts. Detroit Michigan is about four hours from where I live. I know it's not that far, but it adds up. Four hours there Friday, four hours home Saturday, four hours there Sunday, four hours home Monday. And each trip would have time tacked onto it because I love to stop at historic and cool sites along the way. I was in for a long weekend, but I didn't care! So any way, after almost a year from the announcement of the shows and purchase of the tickets, Friday November 10 2023 is here. Metallica had a pop up store a few blocks away and were selling freshly pressed vinyl of the new album with colors of the Detroit Lions. I was hoping to grab one of those, but they sold out quick. I had planned to stop somewhere downtown Detroit for a bite to eat and hopefully get a Stroh's draft after checking into the hotel. It was only a 10 minute walk from the hotel to Ford Field. And along the way was what I thought would be the perfect spot for just that. The Old Shillelagh Bar and Grill. Well apparently everyone else thought so too! The place was packed with drunken metalheads! It was a small place and I knew if we had tried to get something to eat, it would take forever. So we decided to try somewhere else. I had grossly underestimated the size of this concert. This is by far the biggest venue I have ever seen any band. Seating capacity is 65,000, and there are even more people on the floor. I don't think the show sold out, but it had to be close. I didn't see many empty seats. So we skipped finding somewhere to eat and went directly to the show. after getting some pretzels and a few beverages (no Stroh's) we made our way to our seats (great seats! 50 yard line!) just in time for the opening band.

Mammoth WVH. I never got to see Eddie Van Halen so this is as close as I'm going to get. I didn't know to much of what Wolf had been doing. I had seen his video for "Distance" a tribute to his dad, that will definitely hit you in the feels! I knew he was going to be an awesome musician, but wasn't sure what type of music he would be doing. I should of known he was going to be guitar driven. I was overly pleased with the heaviness! I bought both his releases when I got home. They're great albums. His dad would be proud! Here's the setlist.
Another Celebration at the End of the World
 You're to Blame
 I'm Alright
 Like a Pastime
 Take a Bow
 Don't Back Down

The sound was a little muddy, which is understandable for the size of the venue, but it was not to bad. You could hear the guitars really good. Better than the vocals. Not to many people in their seats for Mammoth. I say they missed out!
Up next, Pantera! or a reasonable facsimile there of! This was a first on many different levels for me. I never got to see Pantera back in the day, so it would be nice to hear those songs live. I have seen Rex Brown before with Kill Devil Hill, but have not seen any of the other guys. I have seen Anthrax twice, but have never seen Charlie Benante! I have documented that in other posts. I had tickets to see Ozzy back in 2019, but that show never happened so this was my first time seeing one of my all time favorite guitar players Zakk Wylde! Phil Anselmo has been in many bands, but I have never seen any of them so this All Star lineup tribute to the Abbott brothers was something even more special for me. Zakk and Charlie were the perfect fill-ins for Dime and Vinnie. The Sound was better than Mammoth. Or maybe it was just better because I knew all the songs already. Any way, I loved this show! Here's the setlist.
 A New Level
 Mouth for War
 Strength Beyond Strength
 Becoming
 I'm Broken
Cemetery Gates (tape) (Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul tribute video)
 5 Minutes Alone
 This Love
 Fucking Hostile
 Walk
 Domination / Hollow
 Cowboys From Hell

The pics suck, but here they are.
And now Metallica!!! Not much to say about this one. Been a fan for 35 years at this point. With the No Repeat Weekend concept, I'm hoping to hear some songs (other than the new ones) that I've never heard in the previous 3 shows I've seen. Let's get to it!!
 Creeping Death (Classic!)
Harvester of Sorrow (been 19 years since I heard this one. One of my favs!)
Through the Never (First time for this one. One of my favs of that Album)
Leper Messiah (First time! Another Classic!)
Lux Æterna (Favorite new song from the new album!)
Too Far Gone? (I'm diggin the new stuff)
Primo (A Kirk and Rob doodle)
Fade to Black (My favorite song of all time, and I got to share it with my kids!)
Shadows Follow (Another solid new song!)
 Orion (Bucket list song!)
 Nothing Else Matters
 Sad But True (Heavy!)
The Day That Never Comes (from one of my favorite albums)
 Hardwired
 Fuel (Great pyros)
 Seek & Destroy (Another Classic!)
 Master of Puppets (THE Classic!)

The pics suck, but here they are

Here's some links to videos

This show was one of the best of my life. Mainly because I got to see it with my kids! It was special for many reasons, but that is the big one!
